Privacy policy
Last updated: 18 September 2026
awas ("awas", "we") helps people in India rent, buy and sell homes. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have. It applies to the awas website and the awas Android app.
What we collect
Account details: your email address or phone number, name, role (seeker, owner, builder or broker), city, language, budget and rent or buy preference, and a profile photo if you add one. Listings: photos, videos, price, address, locality, map location and details of homes you post. Messages: chats between seekers and owners, answers to an owner's enquiry questions, and ratings you give or receive. Activity: homes you view, like, shortlist, skip or share, used to personalise your feed. Location: if you allow it, your approximate or precise location, used once to suggest the locality of a home you are posting or to show homes near you. We do not track your location in the background. Camera and photos: only the photos and videos you choose to take or upload for a listing or your profile. Verification: if you apply for a verified badge, an ownership document and notes from our verification call. Documents are seen only by the verification team and deleted after the decision. Payments: payments are handled by Razorpay. We receive the payment reference, amount and status. We never see or store your card, UPI or bank details. Advertising: if you submit a lead form on a sponsored card, the name, phone or email and answers you enter are shared with that advertiser, only after you tick the consent box. Device and log data: app version, device type, and basic logs used to keep the service secure and working.
How we use it
To run awas: show your listings, deliver messages, personalise the feed, send alerts about homes you may like, replies and price drops. To keep awas trustworthy: verify owners, detect duplicate or fake listings, review reports and enforce our rules. To take payments and issue refunds, and to meet legal, tax and accounting duties. To improve the product using aggregated, non-identifying statistics. We do not sell your personal data.
What others can see
Your public profile shows your name, photo, badge, role, ratings and listings. Your phone number and email are never shown publicly. If you list a home, the contact number you add is shown only to a signed-in seeker after they share their own name and mobile number with you, and you receive those details as a lead. If you ask for an owner's contact details, the name and mobile number you enter are shared with that owner. In a chat, phone numbers are revealed only when both people choose to share.
Who we share it with
Service providers who process data for us: Supabase (database, sign-in and file storage), Vercel (hosting), Razorpay (payments), Expo (app updates), and, when AI features are on, an AI provider through Vercel AI Gateway to write listing text, translate listings and answer questions about a home. Advertisers receive only the lead details you choose to send. We may disclose data when the law requires it.
Storage and security
Data is stored on servers in India and other countries where our providers operate. Data is encrypted in transit. Access to personal data is limited to people who need it to run the service.
How long we keep it
We keep your account data while your account is open. When you delete your account we delete your profile, listings, photos, messages, likes and shortlist. We keep payment and refund records for up to 8 years as required for tax and accounting, and may keep anonymised statistics.
Your choices and rights
You can edit your profile and listings at any time, turn off location and camera access in your phone settings, and delete your account in the app (Profile, Delete account) or at /account/delete. Under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 you may ask us to access, correct or erase your personal data, withdraw consent, and raise a grievance. Write to us at the contact address below and we will respond within 30 days.
Children
awas is for adults. You must be 18 or older to use it.
Changes
We will post any changes here and update the date above. If a change is significant we will tell you in the app.
